Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Cape Town

Today you will arrive in the mother city, Cape Town!
“The earliest known remnants in the region were found at Peers Cave in Fish Hoek and date to between 15,000 and 12,000 years ago.[15] Little is known of the history of the region’s first residents, since there is no written history from the area before it was first mentioned by Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias in 1488 who was the first European to reach the area and named it “Cape of Storms” (Cabo das Tormentas). It was later renamed by John II of Portugal as “Cape of Good Hope” (Cabo da Boa Esperança) because of the great optimism engendered by the opening of a sea route to India and the East. Vasco da Gama recorded a sighting of the Cape of Good Hope in 1497. In the late 16th century, Portuguese, French, Danish, Dutch and English but mainly Portuguese ships regularly stopped over in Table Bay en route to the Indies. They traded tobacco, copper and iron with the Khoikhoi in exchange for fresh meat.”

“The main feature of Table Mountain is the level plateau   approximately three kilometres (2 mi) from side to side,  edged by impressive cliffs. The plateau, flanked by Devil’s

Peak to the east and by Lion’s Head to the west, forms a dramatic backdrop to Cape Town. This broad sweep of  mountainous heights, together with Signal Hill, forms the  natural amphitheatre of the City Bowl and Table Bay  harbour.”

After your visit, transfer to the city centre for a tour of the  colourful Cape Malay Quarter, Company Gardens and the  SA Museum.

“The general Cape Malay community currently speaks Afrikaans, with a lesser percentage speaking English.  Although they may no longer speak the Malay languages and other languages their ancestors spoke, various Malay  words and phrases can still be heard in Cape Town today.”

(We can add a return ticket for the Flying Dutchman funicular to the top at an additional cost as it is quite a steep walk up to the lighthouse) Here the two oceans meeting point fluctuates along the southern and south-western Cape coast, usually occurring between Cape Agulhas and Cape Point, it is also home to the Flying Dutchmen legend where stormy swells sunk her and the crew who were domed to sail these waters for eternity, never to make port.

From the lighthouse you will be able to see the rocky headland that make up The Cape of Good Hope! “The Cape of Good Hope is at the southern tip of the Cape Peninsula, about 2.3 kilometres west and a little south of Cape Point on the south-east corner.

Cape Town is about 50 kilometres to the north of the Cape, in Table Bay at the north end of the peninsula. The peninsula forms the western boundary of False Bay. After a full and exciting day in the Cape, transfer back to your hotel. Dinner at a local restaurant (own account).

“The hippopotamus is one of the most aggressive creatures in the world and is often regarded as one of the most dangerous animals in Africa. However, if threatened on land it will often run for water. Their closest living relatives are cetaceans (whales, porpoises, etc.) from which they diverged about 55 million years ago.”

“Expression “cry crocodile tears” is based on the true fact – crocodiles produce tears when they eat.  They don’t cry because they feel sorry for the prey, but because they swallow too much air, which gets in touch with lachrymal glands (glands that produce tears) and forces tears to flow.”
